Endocarditis prophylaxis is only indicated for patients with:

  • Previous infective endocarditis
  • Heart valve prosthesis (including bioprosthesis, allograft and conduit)
  • Certain congenital heart defects:
    • Unrepaired cyanotic congenital heart disease.
    • Cyanotic congenital heart disease palliated with shunts or conduits.
    • Completely repaired congenital heart defect using prosthetic material: only during the first six months after the procedure.
    • Repaired congenital heart defect with a residual defect at the site of a patch or device that impairs endothelialisation.

Endocarditis prophylaxis is NOT indicated for patients with other heart conditions such as:

  1. Innocent (functional) heart murmur
  2. Secundum-type atrial septal defect (ASD)
  3. Ventricular septal defect (VSD) without cyanosis
  4. Mitral valve prolapse
  5. Mitral valve regurgitation or stenosis
  6. Aortic valve regurgitation or stenosis
  7. Aortic tube prosthesis without an aortic valve
  8. Bicuspid aortic valve
  9. Ischaemic heart disease
  10. Status after coronary intervention, including stent(s), or coronary surgery
  11. Pacemaker or implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD)
  12. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
