Comments

Use albendazole in pregnancy and breastfeeding: probably safe during pregnancy (2nd and 3rd trimester) and breastfeeding

Albendazole is licensed for children from 6 years of age. In children between 1 and 6 years albendazole has been extensively used worldwide and can be considered (Keijzer et al).

Take albendazole with a fatty meal (increased absorption).

There are insufficient data on the use of ivermectin during pregnancy and lactation in humans to assess possible harm. Safety has not been established in children < 15 kg.

Treatment duration for hyperinfection in immunocompromised patients is unknown. It is likely that these patients will need to be treated for much longer. Continue ivermectin treatment until stool examination is negative. Given the risk of relapse, consider after therapy "maintenance treatment" (1 dose every 2-4 weeks) and/or regular stool monitoring.

Check for eradication after treatment is recommended: stool examination >2 weeks after treatment or a declining antibody concentration after 12 months
