500 mg ceftriaxone dissolved in 2 ml lidocaine hydrochloride 10 mg/ml (1%) solution (pain prevention).
With a high clinical suspicion of gonococcal conjunctivitis (severe and acute purulent presentation) the patient should be seen urgently (the same day) by an ophthalmologist for microbiological diagnostics, treatment and to exclude gonococcal keratitis.
Because gonococcal conjunctivitis is uncommon and data on treatment in adults are limited, consult with an infectious diseases physician and/or clinical microbiologist about whether local treatment should be started.
