In certain groups, e.g. all people who work in food preparation and healthcare workers, after therapy for typhoid fever check faecal cultures, taken at least 3 weeks after the last day of fever and at least 2 weeks after stopping antibiotic therapy. See further LCI guideline.
Treat carriage if shedding of Salmonellae persists after six weeks. After treatment, perform a follow-up faecal culture to check carriage.
