Infection is self-limiting in immunocompetent patients, but because symptoms may persist for a prolonged period, treatment is indicated.
Immunocompromised: secondary prophylaxis with co-trimoxazole 480 mg once daily as long as the CD4 count is < 200 x 10^6/l.
