Comments
- Obtain two blood cultures every 48 hours after starting treatment until the cultures are negative. For determining the duration of treatment, day 1 is the day on which the blood cultures are first negative.
- The duration of treatment after surgery is determined by the result of the valve culture. If the culture is positive, a full course of treatment is given after surgery. If the culture is negative, the duration of therapy after surgery is the prescribed treatment duration minus the duration of treatment prior to surgery.
- If a patient with native valve endocarditis undergoes surgery with placement of prosthetic material, and the valve cultures are negative, then after surgery the regimen for native valve endocarditis is continued.
- Request a consultation with an infectious diseases specialist for advice regarding additional investigations and management of the therapy.
