Recommendations

≥ 18 years
Dosage Remarks
flucloxacillin po 500 mg 4 times daily for 7 days
flucloxacillin IV 6 g/24 h

or

flucloxacillin IV 1000 mg 6 times daily

In case of signs of systemic infection.

If continuous infusion: first give 1 gram flucloxacillin bolus, then start the continuous infusion.
≥ 18 years

Indications: Allergy to penicillins*
Dosage Remarks
clindamycin po 600 mg 3 times daily for 7 days

If no signs of systemic infection

For furuncle located in the ear canal: clean thoroughly before starting flucloxacillin

For furuncle located in the nose: do not perform an incision (CAVE: cavernous sinus thrombosis)

If there are signs of systemic infection and a beta-lactam allergy, consult a medical microbiologist or an infectious disease specialist about the choice of intravenous antibiotics
